Learn about the presence of microplastics in our local streams.
Plastics are durable, long-lasting, and cheap to produce. Those same qualities make them an increasingly worrisome pollutant, as plastics don’t decompose, but simply break-down into smaller particles called microplastics. Join Dr. Jerry Miller, Whitmire Professor of Environmental Science, Western Carolina University, and Jason Love, Associate Director, Highlands Biological Station, Western Carolina University, as they present an overview of the global problem of microplastics and report on some of their preliminary findings on microplastic concentrations and dynamics in local streams.
This event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. This presentation will occur at the Macon County Public Library, and will be about 45 minutes with 15 minutes for questions. Email Skye with any questions prior to the event.
