Webinar: Introduction to eBird for the Great Backyard Bird Count

When: February 11, 2026 @ 6:00 pm

eBird Status and Trends

Join our Webinar to learn how to use eBird before the Great Backyard Bird Count!

This webinar is intended to introduce participants to eBird in preparation for the Backyard Bird Count and other annual birding events we host here in Western North Carolina. The webinar portion will cover an introduction to the eBird app, the eBird website, how the data is used by scientists, and finally why contributing is so important, especially in our region of Western North Carolina! We will also briefly go over the common bird species we will be likely to see on the upcoming counts, both in Sylva and Hayesville. We will end with a Q&A session.

This free, educational webinar will take place over zoom on Wednesday, February 11th from 6:00pm-8:00pm, and the field trip portions are scheduled for Friday the 13th. The Sylva walk will take place on the Jackson County Greenway from 9:00am-11:00am and the Hayesville walk will take place at the Clay County Rec Center from 10:00am-12:00pm. Register for the webinar by filling out the form below. A staff member will email a link to registered participants in the days leading up to the event.

Meet your teacher

As Mainspring’s Conservation Outreach Associate, Alina Martin aims to encourage the protection and appreciation of land by connecting communities to the birds, plants, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles that share our home here in the Southern Blue Ridge. Her adventures up and down the east coast have introduced her to a wide variety of habitats, and those experiences inspire her to continue nurturing her understanding of wildlife and plant ecology. Armed with her identification knowledge and ever-increasing wonder, Alina leads a variety of educational programs here at Mainspring, and finds something curious and new each time. She is a life-long birder, all-around naturalist, and avid user of eBird and iNaturalist.
