Wildcrafted Basket-Making Class: Poplar Baskets

When: August 21, 2025 @ 5:00 pm

Previous workshop participant Pan constructs the foundation of her basket alongside completed examples from instructor Jeff.

Turn plants into functional art!

Participants will learn the basket-making process from start to finish, including how to process raw materials for best results.

Join the Primitive Naturalist Jeff Gottlieb for this 3 hour workshop to learn the basics of basket-making. This time, we’ll make poplar baskets. Learn how to turn this abundant tree into a beautiful basket! The teacher will provide suggestions, expertise, and guidance on how to build your own unique piece. Class fee is $30, and all materials are provided (though participants are encouraged to bring a sharp pair of pruners if they have them.) This class is intended for ages 12 and up.

We will meet in Wildkitchen Supply (567 W Main St, Sylva, NC 28779) in downtown Sylva just before 5:00pm on Thursday, August 21st. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to park and get settled; the class starts sharply at 5:00pm. This workshop will run until 8:00pm. Depending on the chosen size of basket, participants will go home with either a small, completed basket, or a medium, partially completed basket.

Click here to purchase your ticket (this link will bring you to a different page.) Please leave pets at home, and email Skye at [email protected] with any questions.

Please note that the images used in this event posting are from a previous invasive plant basket-making class. We will not make the same style of baskets as depicted in these photos.

This class can be a bit messy! We recommend not wearing your Sunday best.
This class is great for newbies who are looking for a place to start! Here, a workshop participant learns how to lash her basket’s frame together using a god’s eye weave.
