Let’s explore our winter wonderland!
What birds live here year-round? Do mushrooms grow in the wintertime? Where do fish go in the cold months? How do squirrels find their buried nuts? Why don’t evergreens drop their needles, and how do you even identify a tree without its leaves?
Join Skye at Tessentee Bottomland Preserve to answer all your winter nature questions! We’ll take a short, 1 mile walk through the forest and along the river, learning about the life that thrives here in Western North Carolina even in the dormant season. We’ll listen for bird songs, practice our winter tree ID, keep an eye out for animal tracks, and admire the lichens and mosses that continue to happily photosynthesize through the darker months.

This event is weather-dependent. We will meet at Tessentee Bottomland Preserve (2249 Hickory Knoll Rd, Franklin, NC 28734) at 4:20 and start walking promptly at 4:30. This event should run for about an hour. The trails involved in this walk vary from wide, even, and flat to narrow, sloped, and uneven with some roots and rocks. There are moderate hills along our route.
MEET YOUR NATURALIST
As Mainspring’s Conservation Outreach Associate, Skye (she/her) inspires communities to engage and connect with nature. She holds a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine, and has experience in animal husbandry, wildlife research, and conservation communication. She is especially passionate about mosses, fungi, trees, and salamanders.
