Bee Hotel Workshop, Sylva

When: August 7, 2026 @ 5:30 pm

A completed bee hotel. Note the different materials used in the tunnel caps: mud, resin, and chewed leaves. This indicates that a variety of species are utilizing this bee hotel!

Provide a home for your local pollinators

During this fun and informative workshops, participants will build their own bee hotel while learning how to support our native bees! The state of North Carolina is home to over 500 species of bees, with most species living a solitary lifestyle in which they do not form social hives like nonnative honeybees. Rather, the females are hardworking single moms, each one building their own individual nest. These solitary bees seek out hollow plant stems, dead wood, or bare patches of dirt to nest in, but habitat loss has altered, reduced, or eliminated much of their nesting habitat. Join us to create crucial native bee nesting habitat, and help these single moms provide for their babies!

No experience is required to attend this workshop, and all materials are provided (though if you have a drill, that may be helpful to bring.) Gardeners, conservationists, bug lovers, naturalists, and native plant enthusiasts alike are invited to join us, and renters and students are welcome to attend, too. Owning land is not necessary to install a bee hotel, all you need is a spot to hang it where you can enjoy watching a variety of native bees buzz to-and-fro all spring and summer long!

Tickets are $50 and include all necessary materials. This event will run 5:30pm-7:30pm at The Sylvan Mercantile & Co-Op in Sylva (formerly Wildkitchen Supply) on Friday, August 7th. Please plan to arrive at 5:15pm to park and get settled; the workshop will begin promptly at 5:30pm. Email Skye at [email protected] with any questions.
