Learn the ancient art and science of making fire by friction

This event has been cancelled due to low interest

Making your first fire by friction feels as exciting as if you were the first human who ever made fire! Join the Primitive Naturalist Jeff Gottlieb for this 6 hour workshop to learn the valuable survival skill of friction fire making. During this event, each student will construct their own bow drill kit and learn how to use it to create an ember, then ignite a tinder bundle prepared from wild collected materials. You will go home with your fire making kit and the knowledge needed to make fire with simple tools. People of all sizes and genders welcome- no skill or strength required!

We will meet at Tessentee Bottomland Preserve (2249 Hickory Knoll Rd, Franklin, NC 28734) on Sunday, March 2nd just before 10am. The event will begin promptly at 10am, and will run until 4:00pm, including a half hour break for lunch. We will set up around the historic farmhouse at the Preserve, which is outdoors. We recommend bringing a folding chair, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, warm layers, and warm, waterproof shoes. A porta-potty and hand sanitizer will be available. There is a short, 1/4 mile walk along an old roadbed from the parking area to the farmhouse.

Tickets are $50 per person, with an option to add a bag lunch for $15 (sandwich, chips, and a pickle, no substitutions or alterations.) Click here to purchase your ticket (this link will take you to a different page.)

This event is weather-dependent. Please leave pets at home. Email Skye with any questions.
