Invasive Plant Basket-Making Class, Murphy

When: August 19, 2026 @ 5:00 pm

Previous workshop participant Pan constructs the foundation of her basket alongside completed examples from instructor Jeff.

Turn plants into functional art!

Join the Primitive Naturalist Jeff Gottlieb for this 3 hour workshop to learn the basics of basket-making.

Participants will learn the basket-making process from start to finish, including how to process raw materials for best results.

Learn how to turn nonnative, invasive plants into a beautiful basket! The teacher will provide suggestions, expertise, and guidance on how to build your own unique piece. Class fee is $30, and all materials are provided (though participants are encouraged to bring a sharp pair of pruners if they have them.) This class is intended for ages 12 and up.

We will meet at Olive’s Porch (27 Peachtree St, Murphy, NC 28906) in downtown Murphy just before 5:00pm on Wednesday, August 19th. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to park and get settled; the class starts sharply at 5:00pm. This workshop will run until 8:00pm. Depending on the chosen size of basket, participants will go home with either a small, completed basket, or a medium, partially completed basket.

Click here to purchase your ticket (this link will bring you to a different page.) Please leave pets at home, and email Alina at [email protected] with any questions. Scroll to the bottom of the page to review our refund policy.

Please note that the images used in this event posting are from a previous invasive plant basket-making class. We will not make the same style of baskets as depicted in these photos.

This class can be a bit messy! We recommend not wearing your Sunday best.
This class is great for newbies who are looking for a place to start! Here, a workshop participant learns how to lash her basket’s frame together using a god’s eye weave.
