Meet the ‘manders!

Stop by the Macon County Public Library at 3:30pm on Thursday, July 9th to meet some local salamanders! Outreach Director Skye will introduce budding herpetologists (amphibian and reptile scientists) to a few live ‘manders as we explore what kinds of salamanders live in WNC, how these mysterious creatures spend their days, and why they are important to both humans and nature.
This program will run from 3:30pm-4:30pm, and is free and open to the public with no registration required. This opportunity is geared towards children ages 7-13, but salamander lovers of all ages are invited to attend. Note that we will be strictly observing (not handling) salamanders during this event.
MEET YOUR GUIDE

As Mainspring’s Conservation Outreach Director, Skye Cahoon inspires people to connect with their local landscape and value the conservation efforts that protect it. As a kid, she could often be found climbing trees, hunting for salamanders, or chasing fish at her local swimming hole. Her passion for nature grew with her, and in 2020 she earned her Zoology B.S. from the University of Maine. Integrating her experience in wildlife research with her excitement about the natural world, Skye now strives to make science fun and accessible. She leads a variety of educational programs here at Mainspring, and enjoys continuing to learn about the diverse and fascinating creatures that call the Southern Appalachians home.
