Transform a roundabout into native wildlife habitat
As part of our WNC Wildseed Library program, Mainspring is launching a brand new project: a native meadow restoration within a roundabout. This “mini meadow” will not only provide habitat for butterflies, birds, bees, small mammals, and other wildlife, but will also produce seeds for distribution through the Wildseed Library. During these evening workdays, we’ll nurture and tweak this developing habitat as needed. Duties mostly include weeding, but may also involve transplanting, mulching, pruning, and more. Join us for one evening or all of them to support this exciting experiment!
We’ll meet at the Cullowhee Community Garden at 6:00pm and work until 8:00pm. See the 2026 schedule at the bottom of this page for a full list of workday dates and times. No experience is necessary- we’ll teach you everything you need to know and any necessary tools will be provided. Volunteers should be able to bend or kneel for extended periods of time, and should bring water, sun protection, and any favorite weeding tools (optional.) Long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes are encouraged. Walk-in’s are welcome, but RSVPing is recommended to receive email reminders and weather-related updates. These workdays are weather-dependent, and this listing will be updated in the event of any weather concerns.

The mission of the WNC Wildseed Library is connecting people to the natural heritage of the Southern Blue Ridge by providing wild, local, native seeds and information on how to grow them. We seek to empower communities with knowledge and seeds so they may steward the environment by nurturing native plants on any scale, from a window basket to a whole yard.
