Let’s explore our winter wonderland!
Many birds head south for the winter, but some stay in our backyards through the chilly months. During this event, we’ll discover which birds we see during this time of year, and what they get up to during these cold winter days. We’ll learn how to identify a few common species, including hearing their songs. After the 45 minute presentation, we’ll play a bird song matching game, and invent our own ways to remember the songs! Following the event, young birders will have an opportunity to practice viewing birds through binoculars (dependent on group size and weather.)
This event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. The program will run from 3:30pm-4:30pm at the Macon County Public Library in Franklin, with an optional binocular practice session offered from 4:30pm-5:00pm.
MEET YOUR TEACHER
As Mainspring’s Conservation Outreach Director, Skye Cahoon inspires people to connect with their local landscape and value the conservation efforts that protect it. As a kid, she could often be found climbing trees, hunting for salamanders, or chasing fish at the swimming hole. Her passion for nature grew with her, and in 2020 she earned her Zoology B.S. from the University of Maine. Integrating her experience in wildlife research with her excitement about the natural world, Skye now strives to make science fun and accessible. She leads a variety of educational programs here at Mainspring, and enjoys continuing to learn about the diverse and fascinating creatures that call the Southern Appalachians home.
