Tree ID Walk

When: July 12, 2024 @ 5:30 pm

Celebrate National Forest Week by taking a tour of Welch Farm and learning about the trees that live here!

Join us for a gentle walk along the Valley River for a fun evening of dendrology! As the sun gets low and the shadows get long, we’ll meet some common and uncommon tree species that call Welch Farm their home. Along the way, we’ll learn how to identify the trees we’re seeing and discuss how they support the other creatures that live in and around them. This walk is geared towards beginner dendrologists, but experts are welcome to attend to share their knowledge as well! Before the walk, participants are invited to our Bridge Ribbon Cutting from 4:30pm-5:00pm.

This event is donation-based, suggested donation is $10. Donations can be made online (select “Upcoming Event” from the drop-down menu), or through cash or check (made out to Mainspring Conservation Trust) at the event. Please give what you can, but not more than you can. Your support allows us to protect the special creatures, plants, landscapes, and heritage of WNC for all to enjoy!

This 1 mile walk should take about 1.5 hours and is over mostly level, natural surface ground. There are a few stepping hazards, including divots in the path and roots. Please bring water, a snack, sun protection, and bug protection.

We will meet in the Welch Farm parking lot in Andrews, off the Nantahala Scenic Byway (Rt 74/129/19), just before 5:30pm on Friday, July 12th. The entrance to the parking lot is a little less than 1/2 mile east of the intersection with Marble Plant Rd, on the eastbound side of the highway. See the map below for exact location.

This walk is donation-based, with a suggested donation of $10. Please give what you can, but not more than you can. Your support allows us to protect the special creatures, plants, landscapes, and heritage of WNC for all to enjoy! Donations can be made online (select “upcoming event” from the dropdown box), or by cash or check at the event.

This event is weather-dependent. Please leave pets at home. Email Skye with any questions. To register for this walk, fill out the form below.

Please treat your registration as a formal ticket. Read this event description thoroughly and ensure that the date, time, and location work for your schedule.
